Botox & Fillers Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is a prescription-only, FDA-cleared injectable treatment that prevents your muscles from pressing your skin into wrinkles and folds. Botox is made from small amounts of a highly purified form of botulinum toxin. Your Southside Dermatology and Skin Cancer Surgery aesthetician uses Botox to eliminate wrinkles such as:

  • Furrows and lines across your forehead
  • Wrinkles at the sides of your eyes
  • Lines and creases at the top of your nose
  • Frown lines between your brows

Botox injections take only minutes and begin working right away. You may notice smoother skin within a few days, though your final results aren’t usually visible for about two weeks.

How does Botox eliminate wrinkles?

Botox eliminates wrinkles by blocking the nerve signals that cause your dynamic muscles to contract. Dynamic muscles force your skin into creases and folds that, with time, develop into wrinkles. When the muscle relaxes after a Botox injection, your skin smooths out, too.

Can I still make facial expressions with Botox?

Your Southside Dermatology and Skin Cancer Surgery aesthetician is an expert injector who administers just enough Botox to quiet the activity of your dynamic facial muscles, but not enough to immobilize them. You can still make beautiful and natural expressions.

How long does Botox last?

Botox lasts 3-4 months. Your Southside Dermatology and Skin Cancer Surgery team can schedule your touch-ups in advance so you’ll always have smooth and wrinkle-free skin.

What are fillers?

Dermal fillers are an injectable treatment that smooths out deeper wrinkles and creases, such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Dermal fillers are either made of hyaluronic acid (HA) or are collagen stimulators.

The HA fillers immediately plump up your lines and creases so that your skin looks smooth again. Your aesthetician also creates nonsurgical lip augmentations with HA fillers. The HA fillers can last for up to a year or two, depending on the brand, such as Juvéderm®, Restylane®, and Belotero®, and type.

Collagen stimulators take up to a few months to work because they stimulate your skin to produce new collagen and elastin. Collagen stimulators build up your skin from the inside out, making it firmer and more pliable. Collagen stimulators, such as Sculptra® and Radiesse®, can last for up to two years.
