Chemical Peels Q & A

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a treatment that uses a chemical solution to enhance the appearance of your skin. The chemicals trigger a deep exfoliation that causes the top layer of old, dry skin to peel away, revealing fresh new skin underneath. Chemical peels are used on your face, neck, and hands.

At Southside Dermatology and Skin Cancer Surgery , Dr. Alison Fischer and Dr. Robert Fischer provide three strengths of chemical peels:

Superficial Peel

A superficial peel is the lightest type of a chemical peel and is sometimes referred to as a lunchtime facial. Your dermatologist uses a mild alpha hydroxy acid that gently exfoliates the outer layer of skin. It reduces skin discoloration and rough texture.

Medium Peel

A medium peel is a slightly stronger treatment that penetrates into the middle layers of your skin and typically uses glycolic or trichloroacetic acid. The exfoliation is deeper and reduces the appearance of skin imperfections such as age spots, fine lines, and moderate skin discoloration.

Deep Peel

Deep chemical peels use stronger acids like trichloroacetic acid or phenol to stimulate extreme exfoliation in the middle layers of your skin. Deep chemical peels remove old and damaged skin cells and reduce moderate fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, shallow scarring, and more. You can have deep chemical peels infrequently, but they provide dramatic improvements in your appearance.

What should I expect during a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is similar to a facial. You relax on a comfortable treatment bed while your doctor cleanses your skin and applies the chemical solution. You may experience a stinging sensation, depending on the strength of the peel you choose. The chemicals may stay on your skin for as little as 3-5 minutes or for an hour or more depending on your choice.

How should I take care of my skin after a chemical peel?

After a chemical peel, your skin appears to blister before peeling away. The amount of peeling you experience depends on the strength of your treatment. For example, deep peels take 3-4 weeks to heal completely, and you need to wear bandages for up to two weeks following your treatments.

Your skin is especially sensitive to the sun after a chemical peel, and you must take care to avoid sun exposure. Wear sunscreen and broad-brimmed hats if you must go outside.

>Your dermatologist provides specific aftercare instructions including recommended products to keep your skin clean and moisturized as the old layers of skin peel away.
